STANDARD BANK MIFUMI PRIMARY SCHOOL
Standard Bank Wealth International has supported Mifumi Primary School (MPS) in Uganda through a Jersey-based charity since 2014. From the outset, DI has worked closely with the bank to raise awareness of the school and the work of the charity. Standard Bank wanted to raise funds, encourage staff engagement, build links between MPS and Island schools, and emphasis the relationship between its CSR activities and its core focus on Africa.
DI formed a close working relationship with the coordinator of CSR activities at Standard Bank to identify opportunities. DI wrote newsletter copy and other internal communications to inform and motivate staff. It also helped to coordinate the visit to Jersey of a delegation from MPS in 2015 and establish Skype links between MPS and Island schools. When four members of Standard Bank staff – from Jersey, the Isle of Man, London and South Africa – visited MPS in 2016, DI also generated media coverage in their home jurisdictions.
MPS’s profile and the work of the charity has been significantly raised in Jersey. Not only has thousands of pounds been raised for the school but also Island schoolchildren are now experiencing for themselves, through technology, what it is like to live in Uganda. A DI member of staff has now joined the MPS Jersey Committee, in a personal capacity, to enhance the work of the charity even further.
